At road.cc, every product is thoroughly tested, as long as you need to understand its working conditions correctly. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists and we believe they are objective. Although we strive to ensure that the opinions expressed are supported by facts, the comments are essentially an informed opinion, not a final ruling. We will not deliberately try to destroy anything (except locks), but we do try to find any weaknesses in the design. The total score is not just the average of the other scores: it reflects the function and value of the product-the value depends on how the product compares with items of similar specifications, quality, and price.

Good grades are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

Every once in a while, a new lubricant claims to be a panacea for the life of the chain, providing cleaner/smooth/long-lasting operation without any disadvantages. Wolf Tooth's WT-1 chain lubricant may be the first product I have tried that really satisfies everything I want—and there are more.

Obviously, WT-1 is more than just a lubricant-it is an "advanced synthetic powertrain treatment." Wolf Tooth said that it was developed because it hopes to have a product that can maximize the service life of its transmission products-the company produces more than 300 different chainrings. Wolf Tooth is not an oily type. It was done in cooperation with SCC Tech. If you look around, you will find the same thing as the SCC Slick All conditions bicycle chain lubricant.

It is a blue-green liquid, thick enough to be applied in small amounts, one link at a time. There is no need to remove the old lubricating oil first, but I always start with the newly degreased drivetrain because I want to see how it is different.

After application, you can pass the chain through the transmission dozens of times, or ride short distances. This allows the "detergent-like" components to start working. After that, wiping with a "micro cloth" will produce a lot of black sticky matter-so much, I find it hard to imagine any lubricant left behind. However, in the next ride, the chain runs quietly and smoothly, which is impressive.

After about 120 miles of "riding and wiping", the amount of dirt falling off was greatly reduced. At least for me, what is really impressive is that the black dirt comes off easily. No solvent is involved, just cloth. It is as easy to wipe from the sprocket and sprocket teeth as it is from the chain.

Wolf Tooth recommends that you “reapply every 400 miles”. I lost my courage and reapplied after the next ride (approximately 160 miles), but I don't think it makes any difference. I did find that after each wiping, the chain showed a pleasant luster, just like polished tin.

After that, I did not use it again within the next 200 miles, at which time I found that the chain wear had exceeded the replacement point. Looking at my Strava record, I ran 3,400 miles on that chain, so this is borrowed time, and I think the WT-1 did not cause excessive wear.

If you think of quiet operation as a sign of low wear (noise = friction = wear), this seems to be a very effective lubricant.

At the same time, the dry summer conditions have given way, and while watching the British Tour from Vaildale to Allendale, I encountered heavy rain.

It's like washing a car. I had to pull over and park because I couldn't see where I was going. The road was flooded, I was soaked, and the water spray from the wheels must have completely soaked the gearbox; but I wiped the bike clean again, and the chain looked good next time I rode. No traces of corrosion on the surface.

Is there anything you don't like? You must add to the lubricant the price of the microfiber cloth that is about to become dirty. Nothing can stop you from using ordinary rags, but Wolf Tooth recommends synthetic fibers, and I found that it gets covered quickly. On the other hand, the amount of degreasing agent required is almost zero, because you only need to reapply WT-1 and wipe it off.

The last miracle lubricant I reviewed for road.cc was the Smoove universal chain lubricant, which exceeded expectations for long-life operation. However, I found that it quickly turned the transmission gray with residue, and required a solvent to remove it. I stopped using it all winter because it exposed the outer chain of the chain to road salt-although the resulting corrosion is usually superficial, I don't want an orange chain.

The WT-1 is an American. It is sold for £7 in a half-ounce liquid bottle (15 ml), or £19 for a two-ounce bottle. According to Wolf Tooth, these are 20 grams and 64 grams, but including the bottle... However, the price of 125 ml (or just over 4 fluids) is 15 pounds, and the price of Smoove is easily less than half.

On the other hand, other lubricants that are said to be cutting-edge lubricants are also very expensive. Mike Stead recently tested the Silca Synergetic Drip Lube. A 64-gram bottle costs £32, which is twice the price of the WT-1. Although Mike is really dissatisfied with the performance, it sounds like it works very similar to WT-1.

In addition, we can (and do) argue about the price of lubricants, but high-end tapes cost hundreds of pounds—if you can buy them! – It doesn't seem to matter whether the cost of a drop of lubricating oil is 1 penny or 5 pennies.

The WT-1 meets all my requirements: it is easy to use, durable, weather-resistant, and—perhaps most importantly—makes your gearbox very easy to keep clean.

Long-lasting and outstanding performance-especially when you value clean transmission

Tell us the purpose of the product and the target audience. What is the manufacturer's comment on this? How does this compare to your own feelings?

Wolf Tooth said: "WT-1 Chain Lubricant is a high-quality synthetic lubricant and transmission system treatment suitable for all conditions. It will clean and protect the chain while optimizing chain lubrication for optimal performance. As a synthetic lubrication WT-1 improves mechanical efficiency. The service life of your power transmission system is 3-5 times longer than other chain lubricants. As a chain treatment agent, WT-1 cleans your drive by pushing dirt to a surface that can be wiped off. Chain, and then protect your chain under all conditions, so you can ride for a longer time between applications."

Available in 2.0fl oz (59ml) and 0.5fl oz (15ml) bottles

When selecting chain lubricants and chain treatment agents, ease of use is important. The complete application process of WT-1 Chain Lube takes about 10 minutes, and there is no need to clean your chain before starting.

Here is how to start using WT-1 chain lubricant:

Shake the WT-1 bottle for 30 seconds. There is a ball bearing in each bottle to aid mixing.

Put a drop on each roller of the chain. We recommend applying WT-1 chain lubricant to the top of the chain between the transmission and the sprocket, just in front of the lower pulley.

Go back 20-30 times. This helps the WT-1 chain lubricant find a suitable way between all the parts of the chain.

Wait 5-10 minutes. It's very simple.

Wipe the chain with a microfiber cloth until it looks clean and has a light luster. It looks very dirty at first, and then it becomes clean when you wipe off the dirt.

Cycling. Reapply at least every 400 miles.

So far, it has accomplished everything that Wolf Tooth claims.

It is as good as any long-lasting chain lubricant I have used, and it greatly reduces confusion.

The extended time between applications makes it more economical than suggested by the price.

How does the price compare to similar products on the market (including products tested recently on road.cc)?

Compared with general lubricants, it is very expensive, but much cheaper than some professional blends-Silca's Synergetic Drip Lube is 32 pounds, and AbsoluteBlack's Graphenlube is 46 pounds-155 g bottle is 114.99 pounds.

I am usually cautious about the requirements of chain lubricants that can do all of this, but this is very impressive. It can achieve smooth and quiet transmission, fast and easy to use, and most importantly, it can easily keep the chain, flywheel and sprockets clean.
